The Easiest Targets in November & December

The transition of seasons here in Central Florida creates a perfect blend of weather and conditions triggering a major migration and spawning pattern with certain species of fish. As a local fishing guide in the Daytona Beach region, I am fortunate to share this amazing occurrence with new clients and routine customers of mine.

With the tail end of the mullet run also comes major changes in water temperature and fish behavior. It’s important to understand that many species of fish heavily feed and ‘gorge’ themselves during their pre-spawn phase. My job becomes much easier to put clients on solid trophy fish during the months of November and December. I enjoy demonstrating how to target Bull Redfish, Big Black Drum, and hearty Sheepshead this time of the year.

Knowing what areas to target and what baits to use can make or break your day on the water. Both Bull Redfish and Black Drum enjoy hanging close to structure like bridge fenders, rock jetties, residential docks, and mangrove edges. I typically use the smelliest most fragrant baits to target my Drum species this time of the year. My favorite baits that produce trophy fish, trip after trip are live blue crab, large live shrimp, and clam bellies. Be sure to give them a try during an outgoing tide or in areas that have strong current flow for the best results.

My other favorite species to target in November and December is the Sheepshead. Sheepshead begin to heavily spawn after our first real cold front in Central Florida. Be sure to search for larger sheepshead near older residential docks or seawalls that have more barnacle build-up as this tends to be a favorite meal for our striped friends. I never leave the dock this time of year without fiddler crabs or sand fleas as this will guarantee a bite from hungry Sheepshead. If neither is available fresh dead shrimp or small pieces of blue crab can also be effective. I’ve also had luck targeting Sheepshead in greater numbers near rock jetties and clustered oyster bars.

Give the methods and locations listed above a try early this winter and I am confident you’ll be heading home with dinner for the family. Be sure to make yourself fully aware of FWC size and bag limits on all prevalent winter species before heading out for a day of fun. I have the FWC app (Fish/Hunt FL) loaded to my smart phone for easy and convenient reminders on what species can be harvested and what needs to be released. You could always visit
