Premier Fishing Locations and Tactics for Central Florida

As a local fishing guide, I take full advantage of Central Florida’s premier saltwater fishing across our diverse ecosystems. Ranging from the shallow inshore flats of the Mosquito Lagoon to the backcountry mangroves of the Indian River, extending to the extremely active Ponce Inlet area, we have a wide array of top-notch fishing locations to explore.
Below I’ve outlined some of my favorite spots and species to target in central Florida. Don’t be afraid to explore outside of your comfort zone or join a friend who maybe fishing in a new area, zone, or region. I’ve learned a great deal from other experienced anglers who have included me in their personal fishing adventures over the years.
-Mosquito Lagoon &Indian River: Known for shallow water sight-fishing, tailing redfish, and black drum schools.
-Ponce Inlet & Sebastian Inlet: Very active jetty and nearshore spots for redfish, snook, tarpon, sheepshead, snapper, flounder, and big Jacks.
-Coastal Surf & Beaches: Plenty of pompano, whiting, and mackerel opportunities from just casting into the surf.
These are some of my favorite approaches to catching central Florida’s most desired species when on a charter or scouting spots for future trips.
-Inshore/Flats/Mangroves: Freeline a shrimp into high current areas or try using a live shrimp under a popping cork to encourage more bites. Also try a paddle tail on a jig head around oyster bars and mangrove edges.
-Inlets & Jetties: Place a live baitfish such as a mullet, pinfish, or pigfish on a Carolina rig near the bottom of the column to trigger bites from your larger ambush predators.
-Tackle: Consider using a lighter setup when inshore near flats and mangroves. Bump up to a Medium or Medium/Heavy setup when fishing near jetties, bridges, or inlets. Try using a surf casting setup when targeting fish from the beach to allow for further casts.
