Captain Eddie Bussard of Volusia County, Florida, stands as a respected and influential figure in the state’s outdoor heritage. Known for his lifelong dedication to ethical hunting, conservation, and traditional outdoor skills, Bussard built a legacy rooted in knowledge, integrity, and deep respect for the land. A longtime resident of the Osteen area in southwest Volusia County, he became widely recognized not only as a skilled outdoorsman but also as a mentor, educator, and advocate for Florida’s rural way of life. As a local Bass guide he has helped over 1000 of his customers to catch their personal best right here on the famous St Johns River.

Growing up among the pine flatwoods, cypress swamps, and winding waterways of Central Florida, Eddie Bussard developed an early connection to the outdoors. The landscapes of Volusia County — including the St. Johns River basin and surrounding wilderness — served as his classroom. From a young age, he learned to track game, understand wildlife behavior, and navigate challenging terrain. Over time, he became especially known for his expertise in hunting with hounds, particularly in the pursuit of wild hogs, a demanding and deeply rooted Florida tradition.

Beyond his field accomplishments, Bussard became a voice for conservation and ethical hunting and fishing practices. As Florida experienced rapid development and habitat loss, he consistently advocated for preserving natural lands and maintaining responsible wildlife management. He believed that ethical hunters and anglers play a crucial role in conservation efforts by helping manage wildlife populations and protecting natural ecosystems for future generations.

Captain Bussard also reached a broad audience through his television program, Swamp Talk. The show provided viewers with insights into Florida’s hunting culture, dog training methods, and outdoor traditions. His straightforward storytelling and authentic passion resonated with audiences across the state. Through television, public appearances, field trials, and mentorship, he passed down practical knowledge and values to younger generations, ensuring that traditional outdoor skills would continue to thrive.

Today, the same outdoor community that Captain Bussard spent decades mentoring is coming together to support him during a challenging time. On April 19, 2026, a benefit bass fishing tournament titled “Catching for a Cause” will be held at Downtown Sanford Marina on Lake Monroe.

“Catching for a Cause” represents more than a fishing tournament — it is a gathering of friends, supporters, hunters, anglers, and community members who wish to give back to a man who has given so much to Florida’s outdoor heritage. Participants will launch from Downtown Sanford Marina at safe-light and fish the productive waters of Lake Monroe and the historic St. Johns River system known for its strong largemouth bass population. Weigh-in will be at 2:30 pm, awards, raffle sales and community fellowship will follow the day’s competition to be hosted at “520 On the Water” next to the Sanford Marina and launch site.

Proceeds from entry fees, sponsorships, and donations will go directly toward assisting Captain Bussard with his medical bills and recovery from his recent surgery. Even those who do not fish are encouraged to attend, contribute, and show their support. The event highlights the strength and unity of Florida’s outdoor community — a community shaped in many ways by Bussard’s leadership, mentorship, and example.

The naming of the tournament, “Catching for a Cause,” reflects both the spirit of fishing and the heartfelt purpose behind the event. It symbolizes neighbors and fellow outdoorsmen casting their lines not only into the water, but also in support of someone who dedicated his life to preserving the traditions they cherish.

Captain Eddie Bussard’s legacy is one of stewardship, resilience, and devotion to the land. Through decades of advocacy, education, and mentorship, he helped define what ethical sportsmanship means in Central Florida. Now, through “Catching for a Cause,” the community stands beside him — honoring his contributions and ensuring that his impact continues to be felt across Volusia County and beyond. Please join us for this day of giving back and support our angling brother!
